Functional Mushrooms: A Market on the Rise

Functional mushrooms have become a real trend. Demand is growing steadily, not only in the form of dietary supplements, but also in innovative foods and beverages.

According to current market figures, the global market for functional mushrooms is expected to grow by an impressive 50% in the coming years – with an annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.44%.1 But what makes these mushrooms so special and why are they in such high demand right now?

From traditional Chinese medicine to trendy ingredient*

Functional mushrooms such as Reishi, Lion’s Mane, and Shiitake have a long tradition in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). They have been valued for centuries and used in various contexts to support the body and mind. Here are a few of our favorite functional mushrooms:

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is traditionally used in TCM as an adaptogen to help promote general well-being and support the body during periods of stress.2

Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is traditionally valued in TCM for its supportive role in cognitive functions such as concentration and mental clarity.2

Shiitake (Lentinula edodes) has been valued in Asia for centuries for its versatile properties. In TCM, it is traditionally used to support the body’s natural balance. It is also considered a plant-based source of protein.3

Today, these mushrooms are experiencing a comeback in modern nutrition as interest in natural and holistic solutions grows.2 Already, 59% of European respondents attribute positive health benefits to them.4

Combinations with a wide variety of ingredients open up new taste experiences and creative applications in modern recipes.

Mushrooms in food and beverages: a growing segment

More and more companies are launching products in which functional mushrooms such as reishi, lion’s mane, and others are no longer just supplements, but are also being incorporated into beverages and foods.

The possible applications are diverse, ranging from tea and wellness shots to smoothies and other RTDs to better-for-you snacks such as fruit gummies, snack bars, and even chewing gum. Combinations with fruity or botanical ingredients such as mango, passion fruit, or hibiscus are particularly popular, as they balance out the often earthy notes of the mushrooms.

More than just a hype

Functional mushrooms are on their way to establishing themselves as an integral part of the food and beverage industry. Companies have the opportunity to actively shape this trend and position their innovative product ideas – in the tea sector as well as in beverages and food.

Let’s work together to create functional moments of enjoyment that will delight your customers.
