A beauty from inside and outside: Hibiscus

Who doesn’t love the beautiful Hibiscus flowers? But did you know that it is not the beautiful petals, but the calyx that is the basis for many refreshing and healthy drinks? The tea made out of the calyxes is especially popular in North Africa and is enjoyed hot or cold. It also contains many functional properties, which makes it the perfect allrounder for a healthy hydration. 

About the Hibiscus plant 

Hibiscus, also called wild rosella, originated in Southeast Asia and is now grown mainly in North Africa. The plant can reach a height up to three meters with red blooms. The magnificent Hibiscus flowers are not only visually very impressive, but their calyxes also contain diverse ingredients ranging from various fruit acids to tannins to vitamin C. That’s why it is a popular remedy for colds. 

Hibiscus: The wide range of possible applications   

Since the tea tastes slightly sour, the combination with honey and lime is a match. Hibiscus harmonizes in fruit tea blends with rosehip and rose petals, but also with mint and balm mint. In the Middle East and North Africa, it is flavored with cardamom and cinnamon, both of which have also healing properties.
