• Greenhouse gas emissions down approx. 32 percent since 2020
• CCF down from approx. 380,000 to approx. 260,000 tonnes CO₂e
• Emissions from purchased goods and services reduced by around 29 percent
• Progress toward targets aided by climate protection projects in supply chains and production
As part of the nature network, MartinBauer has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by around 32 percent since the base year of 2020. That marks considerable progress toward achievement of its SBTi targets. Also, in 2025, the nature network’s corporate carbon footprint (CCF) dropped from around 380,000 tonnes of CO₂e to around 260,000.
the nature network’s climate targets, as validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), include a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 90 percent of the 2020 figure by 2040 – along the entire value creation chain. By 2030, site-based emissions are to decrease by 58 percent and supply-chain emissions by 56 percent. The group is also working toward acquiring all its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. As 2025 came to a close, the group’s share of green electricity worldwide was already as much as 80 percent. Accordingly, the group also experienced good progress with its site-based emissions: a reduction of 59 percent in Scope 2 emissions compared to the base year.
Supply chain offers greatest scope for improving climate protection
However, for MartinBauer and its sister companies in the nature network, the greatest scope for reducing emissions is still to be found in the supply chain. Around three quarters of total emissions are generated outside the company’s own sites – in particular in the cultivation, processing and transportation of plant raw materials.
As well as introducing specific reduction measures, the nature network has continuously developed the data basis for its carbon footprint, increasingly incorporating primary data from its supply chains. This creates greater transparency with regard to emissions sources and helps identify further reduction potential.
Emissions from purchased goods and services have decreased by around 29 percent since 2020. This was achieved through close cooperation with raw materials partners, joint climate protection measures, and continual improvements in data collection. Part of the reduction in CO2e emissions in 2025 was due to the fact that the group purchased smaller quantities of raw materials that year.
Projects are taking effect
Specific measures are helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Projects in the supply chains include the installation of energy-efficient drying systems, the use of electricity from photovoltaic plants, and optimization of production processes. In one project in Egypt, the nature network is helping one raw materials partner make the switch from diesel-powered to solar-powered irrigation systems. A 272 kWp photovoltaic plant installed on the premises generates around 550 MWh of renewable energy each year. According to the company’s calculations, that should eliminate up to 460 tonnes of CO₂e annually.
the nature network is also making good progress with greenhouse gas emissions at its own sites, where the main focus is on energy efficiency. Measures include the introduction of a group-wide energy management system, and investments in photovoltaic plants, heat recovery, and biomass.
Climate protection as a shared task
The path to net zero is not a linear one. The pace and extent of emissions reductions depend on many different factors. These include technological developments, investment cycles, regulatory conditions, and the opportunities available to partners in the global supply chains.
Over the coming years, the nature network sees additional potential in working with suppliers, customers, and other partners along the value creation chain. Scope for further emissions reductions lies in expanding the use of renewable energies, investing in climate-friendly technologies, and initiating sustainable agricultural practices. This way, the nature network can continue pursuing its goal of achieving net zero by 2040.
the nature network will soon be publishing its detailed progress report on the SBTi targets and the developments with its greenhouse gas emissions.
